Who is this season’s leader when it comes to knee highs? Aristoc? Levante? The best brand would have to be made with quality in mind, be new and original and appeal to a young audience. The three major contenders, it seems, are Jonathan Aston, Trasparenze and Bonnie Doon.

Firstly, Jonathan Aston’s Fashion Net Knee Highs are the perfect finishing touch to an outfit made up of neutral colours: whites, greys. With their micro-net material, they add a subtle accent of colour with their white or black shading or can make a loud fashion statement using dynamic burgundies and fuchsias. Naturally, one of Jonathan Aston’s best-selling is the Sheer Coloured Knee Highs which, as the name suggests, come in a variety of colours from Candy-Pink to Gravel-Grey, Ivory to Powder-Blue. These could be the light, low-denier addition to any girl’s wardrobe.

Next, of course, is Trasparenze, the luxury Italian brand that never ceases to impress. Spring/Summer 2010 has seen the addition of the Euspira Knee High to the Trasparenze collection - Euspira have a pin stripe and floral design and finish elegantly with a mock suspender just below the knee; these are the quintessential knee high for a business suit or smart-but-sexy skirt. Not forgetting of course the wild and wonderful Trasparenze Hopkins Knee High, a top seller amongst followers of fashion and certainly a young age group. They feature vivid blocks of bright colour contrasting with a black sleeve and go excellently with tailored shorts.

Lastly and by no means least, Bonnie Doon, it seems to me, is the king of comfortable and trendy. Characteristically Celtic, Bonnie Doon’s Scottish Knee-Highs come in one shade of green (‘Clan’ - of course) and fit shoe sizes 4 - 8. Despite their unusual colour, it’s their cheeky three-button cuff in blue-and-red tartan that seems to appeal to the younger generation - and they really do! Their Big Bow Knee-Highs are made in a fantastic purple, aptly named ‘Gypsy’, and again fit an array of sizes. These are certainly the best-sellers amongst teenagers as, with their exaggerated satin ribbon and elegant matte finish, they almost shout, “Yes, I have style!”

But knee highs don’t stop there, if it up-to-date fashion you’re after or comfort and elegance, there are a million brands out there offering just that.
